OUR HISTORY
Cambridge Place Apartments, constructed in 1973, was founded by brothers Leslie H. Miller and Lyle W. Miller. Both Les and Lyle were graduates of the University of Iowa and resided in Iowa City for several years. Les was an active member of the Optimist International Club, a Civil Engineer, and the owner of Coralville Products, a cement block plant in Coralville, IA. During his tenure, he conceived and submitted a United States patent for an enhanced block-making machine. Lyle was an active member of Lions Clubs International, owned Miller Lumberyard, and retired from many years of work as a General Contractor. Over the years, he constructed numerous single-family homes and multifamily complexes within the Iowa City area. The homes constructed by the Miller brothers are renowned for their exceptional quality craftsmanship and the use of high-quality materials. They also owned and managed Montclaire Park, Rochester Square, and Cambridge Place Apartments.
Following Les’s passing on January 1, 1994, Phyllis H. Miller, Les’s widow, assumed ownership of Cambridge Place and actively participated in its daily operations until her passing in 2008. Upon Phyllis’s death in May 2008, her daughters, Mary Kay Adams and Janet Witort, inherited ownership of the property.

In April 2009, Cambridge Place embarked on a new chapter in its history. Janet, Phyllis’ daughter, made the decision that it would be better for the ownership and management of Cambridge Place Apartments to remain local and for Mary Kay and Kevin to assume complete control. Given Janet’s residence in Nevada, it proved challenging to effectively monitor the daily operations and requirements of the property. Kevin Adams and Mary Kay Adams purchased Janet’s share of the building and will continue as the second generation owners in the years to come.

In November 2016, Cambridge Place Apartments installed a 35kWh solar array roof system to provide approximately 50% of the building’s common areas with power. This offset was installed and serviced by Eagle Point Solar, effectively reducing our carbon footprint by at least 878 tons of CO2 over the system’s lifetime. This is equivalent to planting 20,457 trees, reducing driving by 1,756,000 miles, decreasing gasoline usage by 89,556 gallons, recycling 2,774 tons of waste instead of disposing of it in landfills, displacing CO2 emissions from the annual electric use of 100 homes, or reducing coal consumption by 855,542 pounds. These actions further enhance Cambridge Place Apartment’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability. Images of the solar array can be viewed on our Facebook page.

March 2019: Cambridge Place Apartments continues operations without significant disruptions. Renovations of all kitchens are nearing completion, with only five units remaining in the building.

March 2020: The number of units requiring kitchen remodeling has been reduced to two.

October 2020: Construction of the solar array expansion commences.
Eagle Point Solar is expanding the system to meet 100% of the electrical needs of all common areas.

November 2020: The common areas solar array becomes operational.

February 2022: Small-scale projects are undertaken as necessary.

September 2022:
ImOn Communications replaces our previous television provider, offering fiber-optic streaming channels.

September 2024: ImOn Communications will become our internet provider, enabling Cambridge Place Apartments to provide dedicated fiber-optic internet to each unit. Additionally, each tenant will have the option to upgrade their provided 100/100 service (at their own expense) to a faster service tailored to their specific requirements.

March 2025: No significant large-scale projects are currently planned. However, ongoing small-scale projects will continue as necessary throughout the property.

As of February 25, 2025, our solar array Environmental Benefits:
Power made since array came online: 452 MWh
(As an approximate estimate, 1 MW can power around 650 to 1,000 homes for 1 hour)
CO2 Emissions saved: 699308.4 lbs
Equivalent to planting 5284 Trees!!!
